For ALS and Neurological Disorder Patients and Care Providers

Jim's House History

In July of 1997, our son Jim was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's (ALS) Disease.  He was 38 years old at the time, and living in Williston, VT.  Realizing he eventually would be confined to a wheelchair, which would not be compatible with the space restrictions of his mobile home, he undertook the design and construction of a new house.  Jim designed his own house on his computer so it would be accessible and comfortable for his future needs.  With the help of his close friend, Art Goodwin, myself, and a number of other good friends, he was able to live in his new home for a year and a half, until January of 2001 when he left us to be with Our Lord and Creator.

Purpose

Jim drafted a Will directing us to place his new house into a Trust.  This Trust makes the house available for people with Neurological Diseases, including ALS, and their care providers coming to Fletcher Allen from such a distance as to require an overnight stay.  The accommodations of Jim's House include a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and a continental breakfast, all available without charge.  The home is fully handicap accessible.

Jim's House is also used for the ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Support Group meetings which take place on the second THURSDAY of each month from 1:oo p.m. to 3:00 p.m..  All patients and caregivers are welcome.  For more information call 1-802-864-5896.
